What do you do when your mother in law is driving you insane?

	My mother in law wants to move in with my wife and I. I am absolutely against this. She is controlling, demeaning, nasty and generally a bad person to be around. I can only take her on holidays as it is. I have told my wife that I will pay for her mother to have an apartment rather than have her move in with us. My wife has given me an ultimatum - either agree to let her mother move in or face a divorce. K I have considerable assets and a divorce would cost me plenty of money, but I cannot stomach this woman. Am I overreacting? Is there something else that I can do to keep my marriage yet still consider my wife's feelings? - In-Law Madness in MD

	First of all, you have my sympathy. If you and your wife are both willing to consider divorce, then this issue is serious. I don't think that either of you should be using your marriage as a weapon against the other. Marriage is about respect and compromise. There has to be some middle ground for the two of you. Ask yourself if there is any middle ground that would work for the both of you. If you were willing to put her up into an apartment, then perhaps a place close by with a nurse might be an option for the two of you. If I were you I would sit and talk to your wife honestly about your options. The reality is that if you are really ready to divorce then the house would likely be sold and your wife and mother in law would have to find someplace to go. Think about that. You also wouldn't be required to pay for your mother-in-law's expenses if you and your wife divorced. If I were you, I would sit down and calmly go through your options with your wife. The truth is that a divorce wouldn't give her what she wants and it wouldn't give you what you want - so talk it out and be reasonable.
